COACHING - OPEN THE CONVERSATION

Often our lives are not what they seem or what we hoped for. Being solitary in the driving narrative to succeed (and have it all) we set out in one direction and for a time we coast along nicely but then the unravelling begins. Self-help and transformation have only partially delivered on their promises. We're working tirelessly to keep the success engine running because it's expected and anything less is unthinkable.

All the while you're trying to be someone of worth. You care. You seek meaning and connection. But the pressure of having to be relevant and eternally shiny in a place and time that's no longer recognisable is confounding. Our culture of compulsive avoidance and obsessive distraction keep us small, childish and skin deep but it matters that you still make plans and set goals. In the wreckage of sorrow, confusion and defeat you welcome and not shun, visitors who only ask that they have their way with you so that they can show you their gifts. They belong at home in the pantheon, standing side by side as you reclaim your soul in the wonder and tumble of being human in a changing and uncertain world. This is our task. Learning to swim the depths.

I was much too far out all my life and not waving, but drowning.
— Stevie Smith. 'Not Waving but Drowning'

RADICAL MINDFULNESS

I’d rather be whole, than good.
— Carl G. Jung

Sincere and radical attention is a gentle process that uses enquiry and practice to uncover layers of hidden insight and a depth of attention never before seen.

A client once brought her anxiety to a session and rather than being persuaded to be rid of her anxiety, (a disturbance she'd rather not carry) she was invited  to gently enquire about what might be troubling her. What if the anxiety were really a sign that she actually - 'Got it?' Her anxiety was an indication that she was close to an insight and onto something worthwhile. Naming it gave her a quality of attention which in fact touched a nerve so raw that this previous unattainable insight brought a flood of tears and relief.  She had known it all along. Curiosity and wonder and acknowledgment made for a remarkable break through. She developed the surprising awareness that she wasn't the problem, after all.

Mysticism must rest on crystal clear honesty, can only come after things have been stripped down to their naked reality.
— Etty Hillesum.  An Interrupted Life.

FORUM / DISCUSSION GROUPS

How might life be if instead of being here for ourselves, we gave our attention to enable deep seated community-minded living. Currently our stuck, clueless and lost singleminded approach seems to suggest that only by pursuing a reverential self-adoring individualism we can do anything we wish. In this part of the world the empire of individuality reigns loud with a blinkered self-directed approach where in which lies the poverty of our times. But it comes with its own use-by date. Chronic worship of our individualism brings with it a fatigue so relentless it's killing more than just our adrenals and ozone layer. It's an insatiable beast perniciously eating into the health of everything it touches and resulting in the death of community, village, sangha.

Depression is a symptom of a culture that is addicted to speed, action and doing. In depression the psyche says, “I’m not moving another step forward. I’m stopping right here until you pay attention to me.
— James Hillman

Bereft of true connection and deep concern for others, our never needing anyone, self-reliant charge is sucking life from future generations. What do they stand to inherit? The amnesia of our times suggests we'd rather be defeated by the emptiness and loss of community than persuaded to wake up each morning to people who will affirm and have our back. Unknowingly, we blame ourselves when something goes wrong.

To awaken to the Orphan in our grief is the necessary pre-condition for hearing the lament of the world, for witnessing its dying, and perhaps if we are lucky, assisting in its healing. Today we desperately need a transformation of soul, a radical spiritual revolution. The orphan who arises in our souls from the ashes of our grief is one step in this transformation.
— Robert Romanyshyn. The Soul in Grief.

Let's bring radical attention and a kick-arse mindfulness to the table as we feast and wonder together on some of the following:

  • Living deeply & Dying well

  • Grief & In praise of the majesty of life

  • Ritual

  • Ancestry

  • Elderhood

  • Community / Sangha

  • Carrying those who have gone before

GRIEF AND PRAISING THE MAJESTY OF LIFE

Grief is a mystery. It has many forms. It's an intelligence that's generous, insightful, necessary. Grief is a practise. An essential part of the natural order. Listen well enough to its language and the poetics of sorrow can praise the majesty of life. When we willingly allow grief to have its way it can deeply inform us of what and who we love. What does grief ask of us?  And of its consequences when we flee its longing to appear?

Grief is joined at the hip with falling in love with life and for most people its visitation bewilders. Like an oil spill, containing it at once is imperative.
Popular belief tells us to avoid it, deny it and keep busy.
If we do grieve ensure it's in a private, isolated and dignified manner.
We're told "Get over it hastily to reach the other side."
This wayward and oppressive approach to grief is not universal in the world.
Our refusal to learn the mysteries and language of grief keep us grief illiterate. Other cultures who actively gather around their grieving, ensuring a close vigilance filled with an active ritualised life, one that is inclusive and richly nourishing for all concerned. Grief is a deity, an opportunity to learn any unwelcome thing and how might that feed and sustain the larger life? Grief is a skill. We learn to grieve by watching and being on the receiving end, much like when we learn empathy or love.

In the reveries of mourning, I do not offer a psychology of grief. Rather, I offer something closer to poetics of the elemental forces of life which lie beyond psychology. In its worst moments, psychology can be an obstacle to these elemental epiphanies because it appeals too much to the mind and its desire to understand and control.

ATTENTION TRAINING FROM REGULAR MEDITATION

Meditation is unrivalled. Most people spontaneously meditate. It's an instinct. Your body attunes to the natural rhythms of life. As a tool it's a dynamic powerhouse that raises energy, reduces tension and turns down the volume. Discovering your own innate meditation gateways is accessible and easy. With regular practice and a sense of wonder, spontaneous relief is a take anywhere tool.

The Wisdom Traditions of Buddhism speak of not harming, a fundamental approach for all beings. You can hurt yourself using inappropriate meditation techniques. How? Potentially harmful practices that work against a highly responsive nervous system can have implications for your health. For instance women who are menstruating, pregnant or menopausal can hurt themselves when using practices designed for celibate monks. The same is true for men - engaging in practices designed for celibate monks can harm a man's life force, chi and prana.
We mirror the planet's each nuance, disturbance and shift signaling an intimacy that is enormous and alive. The soul of the world. Meditation is simply a call for our attention towards life affirming practices that can also help sustain the health of life around us.
